While most are familiar with the physical aspects ofallergies -- the coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose and scratchy throat, or in severe cases rash, hives, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing and even death -- many overlook the major emotional component, which is unfortunate as handling your emotions is one of the keys to managing allergies in the first place.
Stress or emotions may bring on or worsen the symptoms of an allergy, according to the Mayo Clinic Health Library, but there’s more to it than even that.
When faced with feeling lousy anytime spring or fall rolls around, or having to avoid getting a pet because of an allergy to pet dander, it can bring on feelings of anger, depression and anxiety.
Such stress is known to also weaken your immune system, which could potentially make the physical aspect of allergies even worse.
While emotional issues can and do surround allergies of all kinds, one of the hardest to deal with may be food allergies, due to both the avoidance of the food and the severity of symptoms.
“Food allergies may impact the emotions of patients through both direct and indirect mechanisms. Direct mechanisms include the effects on the central nervous system from biologic mediators released during an allergic reaction to food.
Indirect mechanisms include the stress of coping with a food allergy -- for example, food preparation and avoidance --as well as managing the fear of the potential consequences of ingesting the food,” researchers write in a June 2007 issue of Current Allergy and Asthma Reports.
How to Manage Your Allergies by Handling Your Emotions
The top emotional aspects to conside rwhen it comes to allergies include:
“Often people with allergies find that if they’re stressed or anxious their allergies get worse,” says Hale Dwoskin, CEO and Director of Training of Sedona Training Associates. “So one of the best things you can do to support yourself when you have allergies is to release both the stress and tension that is aggravating the allergies as well as whatever stress or tension you have about the symptoms themselves.”
This is why The Sedona Method, which you can use to let go of the emotions that allergies bring up in you, is so essential for anyone with allergies.
The Method works so well because the more you resist, fear, or dread your allergies, the more you are drawing more of them into your experience. Even waking up in the morning and thinking “I hope I don’t have allergy symptoms today” could be enough to manifest them in your life.
However, if you wake up and accept what is, without worrying or even thinking about allergies, you will be prepared to have an allergy-free day.
“Many people have reported that by simply releasing the feelings they have about their allergies, the actual symptoms either get lessened or can go away completely,” Dwoskin says.
But don't take our word for it. Give The Sedona Method a try,and then send us a note to tell us how it worked for you!
