Unrequited Love:
What to Do if You’re Stuck on Someone Who is Not so Stuck on You

“The love that lasts longest is the love that is never returned.”

--W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)

While Valentine’s Day is a seemingly welcome occasion for those in love, it represents a thorn in the side of those whose love is unrequited. Unrequited love, or loving someone who does not love you in return, is often the sorrowful subject of fairy tales and romance novels, but it does exist in real life -- sometimes with devastating consequences.

"People can die from a broken heart,” says Professor Alex Gardner, a clinical psychologist in Glasgow. "You get into a state of despair and hopelessness."

The condition of “lovesickness,” accepted as a natural state of mind for thousands of years before the 18th century, according to Frank Tallis, a clinical psychologist in London, has some experts calling for greater awareness of this real “illness.”

In some cases, unrequited love can cause debilitating heartache, extreme fatigue, insomnia and depression. In the most serious cases, health experts say, unrequited love can even drive a person to suicide.

How to Cope and Move on From Unrequited Love

Time is a great healer when it comes to healing a broken heart, and though it may feel like agony at first, the more time that goes by the easier time you will have dealing with unrequited love.

When you feel ready, it’s important to talk to someone (a close friend or family member, a therapist, a spiritual figure, etc.) about your feelings. This will help you to remember your previous interests, open your mind to meeting someone else, and help you to get some joy out of life again.

It’s also necessary to allow yourself to let go of the negative feelings you have regarding the experience, and there are likely a lot of them, from grief and anger to low self-esteem and hopelessness. The Sedona Method is a simple yet incredibly effective tool to help you in this process.

The Sedona Method consists of a series of questions you ask yourself that lead your awareness to what you are feeling in the moment and gently guide you into the experience of letting go. Hundreds of thousands of people have already used the Method successfully to:

  • Enjoy deep feelings of inner peace that bring more joy and happiness to everyday life

Best of all, The Sedona Method is a process you can use anytime, anyplace, to improve any area of your life, including moving on from unrequited love.
