The Four Key Steps to Staying Calm in Any Situation
by www. Sedona.com

What is it that makes your blood boil? Your unrealistic boss? The commute to and from the office? Your neighbor’s unbearably loud stereo? Perhaps there are many scenarios throughout your typical day that make you clench your teeth in frustration, shake your head in disgust, and do everything within your power to maintain your composure.

You are trying to keep your cool. You are trying to stay calm.

And that was your first mistake.

Before we explain, rest assured, it is quite natural to be calm. More natural, even, than being upset. And you have the power to stay calm, because ultimately you should be in control of your emotions (and not the other way around).

Imagine, for a moment, what the ability to stay calm could bring to your life. How about:

  • Increased confidence and focus (no one will be able to push your buttons)
  • More free time (no more fretting over the small stuff, or the large stuff)
  • Improved productivity (all of your efforts will be in a positive direction)
  • Greater self-esteem and well-being (YOU are in control of how you feel)
  • No more emotional energy wasted, no more negativity clouding your success

Getting this level of emotional awareness may sound difficult, and perhaps even impossible, but it is well within your reach if you practice these four steps.

1. Let go of trying to stay calm. As we said earlier, the first mistake nearly everyone makes when trying to stay calm, is trying to stay calm.

“If you are focusing on trying to stay calm you are already disturbed by this artificial need,” says Hale Dwoskin, CEO and director of training of Sedona Training Associates.

So what should you do? Let this feeling go using The Sedona Method. The Method will show you how to regain your ability to release negative emotions so that you will always be in control, and not vice versa.

2. Stop expecting the worst. “Your anticipation often causes you to experience even more trauma than the event itself, and tends to get you prepared for a problem when, perhaps, none exists,” says Dwoskin.

3. Take a few deep breaths. Don’t let the simplicity of this suggestion deceive you. Deep breathing is remarkably effective at relaxing your muscles and your mind.

4. Let go of your negative “mind chatter.” After you’ve released your need to stay calm, you may still be allowing negative thoughts to invade your mind. But the more negativity you let in, the more difficult it will be for you to stay cool. Letting go is the key to finding your natural calm focus.

“You should let go of whatever you are aware of that is disturbing your calmness,” Dwoskin says. “Calmness is natural to each and every one of us as we let go because at our core we are peace itself. This is naturally uncovered the more you let go.”
